Southampton Remembers 95 years on
To commemorate the 95th anniversary of the tragic loss of 1,523 people, of whom nearly 550 were from Southampton,
the city council plans to hold a series of events over the weekend 14 to 15 April 2007.
As well as bringing a special Titanic White Star exhibition to Southampton, the city's own Maritime Museum will be creating
a revamped Titanic Gallery featuring material from the council’s collections.
There will be also a programme of lectures focusing on the long term impact that the disaster had on the city. Further
events will include a maritime collectors market around the Bargate monument and a series of Titanic Trail Walks in the city led by the Southampton Tourist Guides.
The Friends of Old Southampton Cemetery also will be organising tours of the Titanic Graves in the cemetery on Southampton
Common.
The weekend of commemorations will close with an outdoor public service and wreath laying on Sunday morning 15 April at the
Titanic Engineer's Memorial by the Cenotaph in Above Bar Street.
The Executive Member for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Steve Sollitt said:
"It is important that we remember the loss of life on that fateful night when nearly five hundred and fifty local people
perished. The effect on the city was felt for many generations and it is appropriate that the council remembers and
commemorates this tragic loss. "
