Titanic Voices ~ 3rd Edition

Titanic Voices, first Published in 1994, was written, compiled and edited by Donald Hyslop, Alastair Forsyth and Sheila Jemima.

Sadly the untimely death of Alastair Forsyth in 2000 left his many friends and colleagues in Southampton in a state of shock.
Now with the publication of this 3rd edition which is dedicated to his memory.

In the early hours of April 15th 1912, the newest flagship of the White Star Line sank, with great loss of life, after striking an iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.
RMS Titanic was the ship that could not be sunk, but on that fateful night the impossible happened, shaking to the core the rich and powerful of Britain and the United States, complacent in their belief that nature herself could be tamed.
On the south coast of England, the port of Southampton was thrown into a state of shock as it learned of the loss of hundreds of crew members who came from the town.

‘Titanic Voices’ takes you back to that time, reliving those momentous events through first hand accounts of those who were actually there. Using many previously unpublished photographs, letters and oral histories, the book traces how the town of Southampton, its people and the Titanic have been inextricably linked from even before the ship was built, up to the present day.

An excellent colour section illustrates some of the many objects, letters and paintings related to the disaster.

The accompanying DVD in the back of the book contains authentic voices of passengers and crew members, as well as local people recalling their memories of that fateful event. It also contains still images and rare archive film footage of the Titanic and Olympic.

’ Published by Southampton City Council, at £25.00 this book is worthy of a place in any enthusiast, collector or historian’s library.
